What is CBD?
CBD (Cannabidiol) is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in the Cannabis Sativa plant. CBD is being increasingly researched for a number of potential benefits that it may offer people. CBD consumers often reports benefits (not limited to) anxiety relief, improved sleep, improved mood, less pain and inflammation. There are many potential benefits of CBD that are still unexplored.
How does CBD work?
The entirety of the specific mechanisms through which CBD works is not yet fully understood. It is believed to reduce some of the effects and side effects of THC in the body. Cannabidiol was widely thought to have significant interaction with the cannabinoid receptors called CB1 and CB2, which are widely distributed throughout the body and central nervous system. However, it has been determined that CBD has relatively low activity at these actual receptor sites, mostly functioning as an antagonist (whereas THC would act as an agonist, or “activator”) at these receptors. Research has shown that CBD instead has other actions within the body and central nervous system, such as partially agonizing (“activating”) a particular serotonin receptor called 5-HT1A. Furthermore, it has been shown to function as an allosteric modulator of particular opioid receptors, but it is not considered to have narcotic or addictive properties. Cannabidiol has also shown to inhibit a particular enzyme called FAAH, which causes an increase in anandamide levels. Anandamide is the body’s primary endocannabinoid (made by the body), which is known to be associated with calming effects.
